How to identify the Water Wafer MKIII: These systems were popular in the late 90s and early 2000s and are often located in a ceiling cavity or a remote wall void.
-
The Visual Clue: Look for the signature thick aqua-blue pneumatic hoses and a stainless steel button plate on the wall.
-
The Specific Part: This is the only inlet valve designed to work with the MKIII. Modern “universal” valves will not fit this unit.
-
Complete Assembly: This part comes complete with the necessary connections for a direct “swap-out” repair.
Genuine Caroma Spare — Part No. 405041 Because the Water Wafer MKIII is a remote-mounted cistern, the inlet valve has to work reliably under varied water pressures without constant maintenance. After 20+ years of service, the internal diaphragms perish, leading to common failure points.
Replace this valve if you experience:
-
The “Slow Fill”: It takes several minutes for the cistern to be ready for the next flush.
-
The “Whistle”: High-pitched noises or vibrations during the refilling cycle.
-
The “Constant Run”: Water continues to trickle into the bowl because the valve fails to shut off, eventually overflowing into the outlet valve.
The Complete MKIII Service Kit: If you are accessing a cistern in a ceiling or wall void, it is best practice to replace all high-wear components at once to avoid a second trip. We recommend also purchasing:
-
Caroma Slave Bellows: To ensure the flush triggers every time.
-
Push Button Seal Kit (405178): To restore the pneumatic air seal at the wall plate.

Q: Can I use a modern Fluidmaster or Caroma Uni-valve?
-
A: No. The internal configuration and the way the valve connects to the Water Wafer MKIII body is unique. This assembly (405166) is the only direct-fit option.
-
-
Q: Why is my cistern in the ceiling?
-
A: The Water Wafer was designed to allow for a “minimalist” bathroom look before modern in-wall cisterns became standard. By hiding the tank in the ceiling, you only see the button plate and the pan.
-
-
Q: Does this include the float?
-
A: Yes, this is the complete inlet valve assembly as pictured, ready for installation
