Symptoms of a Worn Bellows: The bellows sit inside the Pneumatic Operating Mechanism. Over 10–20 years, the rubber loses its “spring-back” ability.
-
Sticky Buttons: Does the flush button stay depressed or feel “mushy” when pushed?
-
Poor Flush: Does the button feel like it has no resistance, and the water doesn’t release into the pan?
-
Visible Damage: If you inspect the mechanism, do the bellows look flattened, stiff, or have visible hairline tears?
The Solution: If the rubber has perished, the air cannot force the plunger to lift the outlet valve. Replacing these bellows restores the pneumatic seal.
Genuine Caroma Factory Spare The Water Wafer was Australia’s first remote-access cistern, often hidden in roof spaces or wall cavities. Because these systems are now aging, the rubber components are the most common point of failure.
Is it the Bellows or the Button? If replacing the bellows doesn’t solve the “sticky button” issue, the problem may be at the other end of the blue tubes.
-
The Button Seal Kit: If air is escaping from the wall plate side, you likely need the Caroma Push Button Seal Kit (405178). This is the only remaining service kit available for the original Water Wafer button plates.
Pro-Tip for Plumbers: Since Water Wafer cisterns are often difficult to access (located in ceiling voids), we always recommend replacing the bellows and the Outlet Valve Seal (405182) at the same time to ensure you don’t have to go back in the roof twice.

-
Q: How many bellows do I need?
-
A: Most Water Wafer mechanisms use a pair (one for half flush, one for full flush). We recommend replacing both at the same time for consistent button pressure.
-
-
Q: Will this fit the modern Invisi Series II?
-
A: No. Modern Invisi systems use a completely different pneumatic bellows design. This part is strictly for the legacy Water Wafer (identifiable by the aqua-blue tubes).
-
-
Q: Why is my button still sticky after replacing this?
-
A: If the bellows are new, check the 405178 Button Seal Kit. If the seals behind the buttons are leaking air, the bellows won’t receive enough pressure to expand.
